Thesis Title: Creative Response – A New Look at Archiving: The Role Artists Play in Developing Creative Response from Field Recordings of Ethnographic Research.

Diana Chester is an artist, musician, technologist, and educator whose work draws from sound studies, archival studies, and ethnography. Diana holds a BA from Mount Holyoke College, an MA from Columbia University, and her PhD in Digital Media at the University of Porto.
Her dissertation explores the separation between practice and theory in the academy, and proposes a paradigm that presumes there is a benefit that results from unifying these two approaches for inquiry and analysis. By exploring the boundaries of and employing methods and techniques from the disciplines of Digital Media, Ethnographic Studies, and Archival Studies, her research aims to identify new pathways revealed through this hybrid disciplinary approach.
The major contribution of this study is an approach to artistic practice mediated by digital media technologies using materials of sensitive expressive culture, and the contributions of the resulting creative work on the sustainability and preservation of cultural heritage and traditions. The process of creative response is both intellectual and creative in its nature; it is an ideal hybrid of the theoretical and practical elements of the way that we think and function as human beings.

Thesis Title: The Exaltation of a Sense: Haptic Art

Abstract:
The “future is haptic” is what we have been hearing from technologists and visionary theorists. Yet, haptic is not a technological feature, but a biological function. Haptic is almost an unknown term outside the research discourses and engineering labs. When asked, the majority of people ignore the relation between haptic and touch. What is unknown is that haptic refers to our multifarious sense of touch, formed by the cutaneous, proprioceptive, kinesthetic, and vestibular sensory systems. Therefore, the scope of haptic is far more comprehensive than what we are generally taken to perceive. Proposing to rediscover the haptic sense through crossroads of art and design mediated by emergent technologies, this research explores the possibilities within our reach to create and experience the haptic, substantiated by a deeper understanding of its essence.
Introducing the term Aisthantic to characterize a felt experience through touch, etymologically derived from the Greek aisthanthike, meaning ‘felt.’ Formulating the inductive Theory of Aisthantic Experience proposing to formalize the analysis of quality of felt experiences. Using assessable phenomenological descriptive methods of psychology adapted to aisthantic experiences.

Thesis Title: Weak KAM Theory for a Weakly Coupled System of Hamilton-Jacobi Equations.

Research Work: In the paper that followed my Ph.D. thesis, we extend the weak KAM and Aubry-Mather theories to optimal switching problems. We consider three issues: the analysis of the calculus of variations problem, the study of a generalized weak KAM theorem for solutions of weakly coupled systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, and the long-time behavior of time-dependent systems. We prove the existence and regularity of action minimizers, obtain necessary conditions for minimality, extend Fathi's weak KAM theorem, and describe the asymptotic limit of the generalized Lax-Oleinik semigroup.

Thesis Title: Weak KAM theory on the d-infinite dimensional torus.

Research Work: In a nutshell, the classical KAM (Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser) theory studies finite-dimensional, near-integrable, smooth mechanical systems. The weak KAM theory is a relaxed version of the classical theory that studies non-smooth, non-integrable mechanical systems. In my thesis, I generalized methods of the weak KAM theory to study infinite-dimensional mechanical systems. These systems are used to mathematically model mechanical systems with a large number of particles such as fluids.

His thesis focuses on motion representations supported by relational-context features for the analysis of human activity in video under three domain settings, namely surveillance, multimedia and behavioral. Each one provides the appropriate constraints and characteristics to investigate three levels of action categorization defined by: i) the group in the scene, where global motion patterns and social collective activity are analyzed; ii) the whole in the frame, where motion provides evidence of relevant foreground and different kinematics and contextual features are integrated for classification; iii) the parts in the body, where segmented motion regions are represented to characterize expressiveness.

The research challenges are: i) efficient global motion representation for different surveillance scenarios; ii) individual and collective representations for social behavior analysis in surveillance scenarios; iii) importance of motion to identify relevant movement and integrate contextual information into multimedia video classification; iv) combination of motion features that capture expressiveness intention and characterization in non-verbal communication scenario.

Thesis Title: Journalism in the Age of Personalization: A Psychophysiological Approach to the Attention Economy.

Research Work: Drawing upon an review of literature, our research aims to advance the extant perception of technological-neutrality of algorithmic-driven distribution. We expose how algorithms have an inherent biased, non-transparent, unaccountable, control over the flow of information, and, accordingly, redefine the concept of gatekeeping. Furthermore, we approach wearable technologies as a new type of activity monitor and scrutinize the ways that it can, potentially, further interfere with the dynamics of personalization.

Cláudia Silva is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-ITI). She holds a Ph.D. (graduated in Spring 2016) in Digital Media from the University of Texas at Austin-Portugal international doctoral program. Within this context, in Austin she did one year of coursework at UT Austin and conducted more three years of fieldwork for her doctoral dissertation, under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Straubhaar. In Austin, she has also worked as a Bilingual Lead Instructor of the digital inclusion program TechComunidad, at the non-profit organization River City Youth Foundation, where she conducted ethnographic research on digital inclusion and locative media. Cláudia Silva holds a M.A. in Journalism from the New University of Lisbon, in Portugal, and a B.A. also in Journalism from the Catholic University of Minas Gerais, in Brazil. She has worked as an Arts journalist for the leading national Portuguese newspaper Público, and has published in local, regional, and national newspapers in Brazil, such as Folha de São Paulo.
Her research interests focus on the study of how locative media as a whole is changing the way we understand space and place, through the production of place-based information for digital mobile technologies, such as GPS-enabled phones, RFID, NFC, and QR codes. In particular, she is interested in understanding how the production of locative storytelling may help underrepresented populations to have a better sense of place and how they can use it to create a positive narrative about the locality where they live. Her empirical work involves ethnographic techniques, workshops, participant observation, and qualitative interviews. Over the past three months, as a Postdoc researcher, Cláudia has been working on a research project about the natural capital of Madeira island, in which locative storytelling will be a subject of analysis.

Research Interests: My research has been focused in the fied of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) and Optimal Control. In particular, it concerns systems of equations called Mean Field Games (MFG), which model differential games with a large number of players. My Ph.D. Thesis addressed extensions of MFG systems that arise in many applications. Later in collaboration with E. Pimentel, we considerably improved some of the results in my thesis. Also, together with D. Gomes we obtained a significant result on time-dependent MFGs with congestions, which was one of the first results in this direction. Recently, with D. Gomes and E. Pimentel, I coauthored a book "Regularity Theory for Mean-Field Game Systems" which presents a brief and accessible introduction to our work and related research. At present, I am involved in various projects, which include a "mean-field optimal control problem" (with Jose Carrillo, Imperial College London) and a study of a "class of variational MFGs with congestion" (with D. Gomes, R. Ferreira, L. Nurbekyan and D. Evangelista, KAUST).
