Title: Performative Sound Design

Abstract: Performative arts have long explored creative strategies based on open forms, mostly improvisational. I strive to design a computational system which is capable of integrating the compositional elements of the performance in a volatile way. The proposed model aims to instigate a framework for collaborative creation between sound and gesture-based on biofeedback-informed music practices, which will help the sound designer to explore the spectrum of sound parameters interactively

Interests: Sound design for Performance Arts

In Computer Science. After a brief experience as a researcher digging through 80’s Fortran code for astronomic simulations, his interest in the expressive potential of videogames and his love of the demoscene made him enroll in a MSc in Computer Graphics where he met a group of talented individuals with whom he founded his own startup company.

He currently works as a creative translator the intersection between technology and Digital Art, helping artists bring their visions to reality. His current research is focused on creating tools that allow artists to collaboratively harness the potential of distributed heterogeneous hardware systems in their everyday practice.

I started my career as a radio producer in Madrid, Spain, in 2000. After that I have worked mostly as a press reporter for Portuguese dailies and newsmagazines, such as Público and Sábado. I have been a foreign correspondent in Helsinki, Finland and a visiting journalist in Austin, Texas. My biggest passion as a journalist is to chase a good story wherever it leads me. I already had the privilege of ending up in quite interesting locations such as Cambodia, Laos, Kosovo, Egypt, Algeria, Western Sahara, Iceland or Lapland. I also teach news and feature writing at Cenjor.
Holding a Masters in journalism and a Postgraduation in Human Rights, I am currently a PhD fellow in Digital Media within the University of Texas at Austin / Portugal Colab. My first trip to Austin was in 2011 when I was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study environmental journalism. Then, thanks to FCT funding I was able to return in 2015. My current research interests include topics such as: news literacy, environmental reporting, online journalism, multimedia, storytelling, feature writing and human rights.

Guida Casella is a digital creative and researcher in the UT Austin-Portugal Digital Media Programme working in Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, New University Lisbon.
With a background in Fine Arts and an MA in Scientific Illustration, she situates her work between art, science, communication and technology.
Her PhD research examines information visualization in archaeology historically and comparatively, across print and digital media.
The main research question is how the computer screen, as the main way of accessing information today, is impacting the tradition of pictorial representation of the historical past. The hypothesis is that the principles of interactivity and digital storytelling applied to visual methods for archaeological research and dissemination, remediate older media but also innovate, increasing participation and engagement.
Her research interests include heritage interpretation, digital storytelling, community arts and participatory culture. Her research and creative work has resulted in publications, exhibits, community arts and web projects.

Research Work/Interests: Currently my background and professional activity are around User-Experience Design. And in the past years, I have been observant to the confluence among User-Experience Design and Internet of Things (IoT). With this in mind, I saw in this doctoral program a singular opportunity to study even further the synergy between these two fields. IoT cannot improve people's quality of life if do not fetch any utilitarian and hedonic value. And for that reason, my studies will be focused on how people accept or reject IoT applications and services, in order to enhance, clarify, and increase their acceptance to it. The research shall attempt to identify opportunities, prospects, limitation and risk embedded in the design process applied to the IoT design projects. The understandings shall help us to theorize how the IoT might be designed and focused on human-centered perspectives.

Research Work: A Computational Approach on Mapping Real Data Biomedical Geometries.

Delineating the normal postnatal development of the pulmonary artery (PA) and ascending aorta (AA) can inform our understanding of congenital abnormalities, as well as pulmonary and systolic hypertension. Therefore, it is important to study in detail the growth characteristics of these arteries. On an initial stage of this kind of study the primary task is to represent the geometry involved in the problem.

Our main goal is to formulate and implement a novel coordinate system using Wolfram Mathematica in order to represent and reconstruct the geometry of the pulmonary artery of a sheep computationally. We will call this new coordinate system the annular coordinates. Before applying the change of coordinates to real data, we validate this approach of reconstruction and representation for an idealized torus-like PA geometry, discussing the results for both afterwards.

- Creative Director, WAY Marketing Agency (2006-2007)
- Assistant Professor, Portalegre Polytechnic School, Design Dept., IPP-ESTG (1999-2006)

Research Abstract:
Interactive Narratives in a Multisensorial Environment - The development of new digital systems and the relative accessibility of digital tools for the design, printing and production of narrative content has led traditional distribution and broadcasted narrative content to a dead end. A new interactive, personalized relationship which developed first between videogames and their audience, and later with PC based game narratives, has profoundly influenced all of the narrative media formats. In order to achieve a fully interactive, multisensory narrative experience, research is necessary in both the conceptual area of collaborative storytelling (which allows the audience to contribute to the script through interaction) and in the physical computer systems and interfaces which can read and produce the final output multi-sensorially.

Research work: Digital Musical Instrument design: fostering authorship of composers and creativity of performers.

"My project aims at studying how scores can be adopted in interactive scenarios that foster performers' creativity in performances with digital musical instruments (DMI) that have some degree of unpredictability. More in detail, the specific objective of such study is to provide performers with some freedom, to help them to express their own creativity when performing with DMIs while maintaining the composer's authorship of the music. A secondary objective of the study is improving the development of creativity for students in pedagogic scenarios: in this case, music students will be the performers."

Isabel Paiva

FCT/UNL, FCSH/UNL and UT Austin

PhD Student, Digital Media

Supervisor: António Câmara

Enrolled: 2010

Current Position: Research fellow at CENSE - Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research.

Thesis Title: Extended skin – designing interactive content for ubiquitous computing materials.

Research Work/Interests: The motivation for current research rose from acknowledging that technological innovation is consistently happening in the fields of applied science (a.k.a. engineering). Despite this, the incorporation of state of the art inventions in quotidian life, excluding some discussed cases, has not typically been the priority concern of Architecture, Design and Art (A.D.A.) action. In the case of Ubiquitous Computing (U.C.) a deeper analysis into the subject show that there is a minority contribution from the humanities to the field (Dourisch and Bell, 2011). Dourisch and Bell simultaneously recognizes difficulties of applied science (engineering) to consider the humanities as fundamental contributors in the process of making. Current research pursuits to foster these relations, and questions if these can open perspectives on the matter of designing within a U.C. context.

Presently I am a researcher in the Doctoral Program in Digital Media at the University of Porto (Portugal), investigating the impact of 3D displays and stereoscopic representation on the persuasiveness of communication campaigns. This study explores the use of incipient stereography image-making techniques in the production of information campaigns devised for 3D screens. Previously, I was an invited researcher at University of Texas at Austin (United States). I hold a graduate degree in Industrial Design from Faculdades Oswaldo Cruz (São Paulo, Brasil) and a Master degree in Multimedia from the University of Porto. Also, I received professional training in computer graphics production and 3D character animation at VIA University College (Denmark). I have been working in the area of visual communication for over a decade, being a design generalist with expertise in graphic design, interactive design and motion graphics. Furthermore, I have experience with production of illustrations and 3D animations and development of advertising campaigns. Having developed a career in different countries, I have a multicultural background with experience in various professional contexts, including academic institutions and communication companies, which contribute to a versatile analytical insight, innovative vision and technology savvy regarding the creative industry.
