Porto Media Innovation Labs) is the Center of Competences of the University of Porto for the media area, whose mission is to further develop the capacity of the university in the field of media, teaching, research and innovation, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration between existing university structures and articulation with external partners.

ABOUT THE LECTURE:

This presentation will focus on trends and issues related to Online Learning, including the mixed course delivery models, use of learning management systems (Blackboard, Moodle), student engagement, and cultural diversity. In particular, it will be discussed the impact of mobile learning and a growing technology — Augmented Reality (AR). As the usage of mobile devices in formal settings continues to rise, so does the opportunity to harness the power of AR to enhance teaching and learning. Many educators have experimented with AR, but has it proven to improve what students grasp and retain? Is AR just another fun way to engage students, with little transformation of learning? Minjuan Wang will introduce augmented reality as an emerging trend in education, provide an overview of its current development, and also explore examples of AR implementation in both higher-education and industry.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Minjuan Wang is Professor of Learning, Design, and Technology at San Diego State University (SDSU), and distinguished professor of Shanghai International Studies University. She also worked as a project manager for the Chancellor’s Office of CSU (California State University), on Open Educational Resources, where she assisted in forming two IEEE-sponsored editorial boards for the MERLOT project. In addition, she and her American colleagues obtained a four-year National Science Foundation grant to study environment protection (including the Golden monkeys) in Fanjingshan, Guizhou province. In her 17 years at SDSU, she teaches Methods of Inquiry, Designing and Developing Learning for the Global Audience, Mobile learning design, Technologies for Course Delivery, and Technologies for Teaching. Her research specialties are multidisciplinary, focusing on the sociocultural aspects of Online Learning, Mobile Learning, Augmented Reality, Cloud Learning (MOOCS), and Intelligent Classrooms. She is a chief editor for one computer science journal (Emerging Technologies and Pedagogies in Education), and also serves on editorial boards for four other education technology journals: Open Education Research, International Journal on E-Learning (IJEL), the Open Education Journal, and Journal of Information Technology Application in Education. As a winner of several research awards, Minjuan is recognized as one of the high impact authors in blended and mobile learning.
