The seventh annual FUTUREPLACES digital media lab will take place October 15-18, 2014 in Porto, Portugal.

FUTUREPLACES will kick off with the Digital Media Doctoral Symposium on October 15.

Doctoral students, program alumni, and faculty will gather to hear research presentations on October 15 at UPTEC PINC in Porto. Jillian York, the Director for International Freedom of Expression for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, will open the Symposium with a keynote speech titled "The Chilling Effects of Surveillance." Following her talk, students and alumni from the New University of Lisbon and the University of Porto will give short presentations of their research. The slate of speakers includes Rodrigo Carvalho, Luciano Moreira, Cláudia Silva, Eduardo Morais, André Rocha, Pedro Ângelo, Marcela Canavarro, Horácio Tomé Marques with Francisco Marques-Teixeira, Patrícia Nogueira, and Luís Grifu, as well as alumni Daniel Brandão and Nuno Duarte Martins. The FUTUREPLACES MediaLab for Citizenship, which runs through October 18, follows the Symposium.

York will also appear on a roundtable about freedom of information on October 16, joined by Len Massey of the Royal College of Art, FUTUREPLACES co-curator Heitor Alvelos, and Sara Moreira, formerly of Global Voices. The MediaLab for Citizenship will feature nine Citizen Labs on diverse topics including game development, collaborative approaches to frugal meals, oral history, and a ready-made guitar ensemble of non-guitarists. Other FUTUREPLACES 2014 attractions include a presentation of documentaries produced in the U. Porto Multimedia MA program, a screening of the biography of late activist Aaron Swartz, titled "The Internet's Own Boy," a panel on smart technology and creative citizenship, and numerous concerts. Throughout the three days, Radio Manobras Futura will provide broadcasting coverage and investigate different aspects of the events.
